Last year, I reflected on how my stance on NBA Live 2003 had softened. When I’ve experienced a significant change of heart, it only feels appropriate that I follow up with an updated retrospective.Īs I’ve previously discussed, I’ve developed a greater appreciation for games such as NBA Live 06 for Xbox 360, NBA Live 10, and NBA 2K14 for PlayStation 4/Xbox One.
However, there are titles that I’ve changed my mind about upon revisiting them with fresh eyes. One of my goals for 2023 is to finally get around to games that have been on the To Do List for years, including the NBA Street series. Thanks to my efforts in amassing a large collection of basketball video games, I have a plethora of classic (and not-so-classic) titles that I’m yet to cover here in Wayback Wednesday. This week, I’m revisiting NBA Live 2001, and sharing some further opinions on a game that I’ve previously profiled. This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. Here are five of those details that stand out to me. NBA 2K19’s M圜AREER story had some fun details that could’ve potentially made it an enjoyable retro gaming experience, but I’m glad I was able to enjoy them when I could. It may not be a big deal to everyone, but it’s a shame that the single player portion of M圜AREER is now so intertwined with the connected experience that it’s limited – or completely absent – following the servers being shut down. As such, these fun details are now permanently lost.

Unfortunately, NBA 2K19’s M圜AREER story is no longer playable, as the server shutdown has left the game with the stripped-down offline version of the mode.

I personally played through it on both PC and PlayStation 4. Indeed, some of the fun details in NBA 2K19’s M圜AREER story made it worth playing through at least once, if not twice. This ability to skip the story was first implemented in NBA 2K19’s M圜AREER, but that wasn’t the only good addition that year. Others have been more enjoyable to play through, though many gamers still opt to skip the better ones. Some of them have been intrusive, poorly-written, or both. Since their introduction in NBA 2K14 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, M圜AREER stories have been controversial. This week’s Five is a list of five fun details that could be found in NBA 2K19’s M圜AREER story. The topics for these lists and countdowns include everything from fun facts and recollections to commentary and critique. Welcome to another edition of The Friday Five! Every Friday I cover a topic related to basketball gaming, either as a list of five items, or a Top 5 countdown. When a game is able to strike the right balance, it adds fun to the virtual hardwood. Then again, how much is too much depends on how seriously you’re taking your virtual hoops! Conversely, arcade titles invite more humour in their presentation and gameplay, and can seem dry without it. In a sim game, too much humour may have a negative effect on the atmosphere, making it feel too silly. Needless to say, personal preference is also a factor here. It obviously has its place in the genre, though the tone of a game tends to influence how heavily it leans into being humorous. With that out of way, humour is something that we do find in basketball video games, both sim and arcade. It’s a subject that’s bound to come up from time to time on a site discussing basketball, thanks to “centre” and “center”! In any case, humour, humor…I’m talking about the same thing. I know it’s not an issue for most people, but I have received the occasional comment about supposed “mistakes” and “typos” in my articles because I’m not using American spelling. I’m spelling it “humour” because Australian English, like British English, tosses the letter “u” into a bunch of words that American English doesn’t. So, a quick note before we get into this week’s topic: yes, I do mean “humor”. This week, I’m tipping things off with some reflections on the role that humour plays in basketball gaming.
